Second Courchevel-Meribel Coordination Group Meeting Held

The second coordination group meeting for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2023 in Courchevel-Meribel (FRA) was held last week over two days.

The Coordination Group meeting brought together all of the key stakeholders who visited both sites of the future World Championships and undertook technical inspections of the venues in Courchevel and Meribel.

The dual resort concept is an exciting one for the Organisers, as it presents a massive opportunity to highlight two premiere resorts in the region. The women’s’ competitions, parallel individual and team events and medal ceremonies will be staged in Meribel, while the men’s events and opening ceremony will be held in Courchevel.

For the second coordination group meeting, Director General Perrine Pelen and Deputy Director Jean-Philippe Demael alongside the French Ski Association headed by President Michel Vion welcomed a delegation from FIS, led by FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis, in addition to representatives from the rights holder Infront. The two resorts of Courchevel and Meribel were present with key representatives, and cableways as well as the sport clubs (Club des Sports) who are fully integrated in the Organising Committee working groups.

At the meeting, the Organisers placed emphasis on seven different areas including the General Organisation, Sport, Marketing, Governance, Finance, Communication and Infrastructure/Construction. In this early stage of the preparation progress, the main efforts have been dedicated to building the infrastructure with significant strides already made over the summer.

Another area that has seen enormous progress since the last Coordination Group meeting last spring is the formation of the Local Organising Committee along with its organisational chart, management and financial plans.

Besides the main Coordination Group plenary meeting, smaller working groups met, inspected the competition venues and discussed sport, media and marketing topics in depth.

”Courchevel-Meribel 2023 has made tremendous progress over the past six months, both with the facilities including construction projects serving both the resorts and the Championships, as well as the organisational structure and operational planning. The collaboration between all the stakeholders is first class, constructive and open towards the same vision of organising excellent FIS Alpine World Ski Championships to showcase to the world.”

Now all of the attention will turn to the winter season with Courchevel playing host to women’s Audi FIS Alpine World Cup competitions, coming up quickly in mid-December
