Ragged Mountain Sold To Local Investor Group, Pledging To Preserve Community Character

A new era has begun at Ragged Mountain Resort, as a group of local investors with deep ties to the area has finalized the acquisition of the beloved New Hampshire ski area. The sale, completed on November 4, transfers ownership from RMR-Pacific, LLC (an entity associated with former operator Pacific Group Resorts) to SF Mountain Co., LLC (SFMC).

Doug Anderson, owner of Ragged and co-founder and director of Pacific Group Resorts, is stepping back from the ski industry, Brandon Schempp, first vice president of CBRE told the New Hampshire Union Leader. Pacific Group Resorts manages ski operations at Ragged.

Ragged, located less than two hours from Boston, bills itself as “New Hampshire’s best kept secret for skiing.” The ski area has a vertical drop of 1,250 feet, 57 trails, five lifts, and 250 skiable acres.

The real-estate transaction for the Danbury resort was reported to be approximately $6.4 million. This move is being celebrated by the local skiing community, who view the new ownership as a commitment to maintaining the mountain’s community-focused, affordable character.

Local Roots, Long-Term Vision

SF Mountain Co. is led by a group of six close friends who grew up skiing and recreating at Ragged Mountain and have strong ties to Danbury and the surrounding region.

“Ragged has always been more than a ski area—it's been a community,” said Carl Rominger, a partner in SFMC, in a statement. “We’re committed to building on what makes this place special—great skiing, great people, and a genuine New Hampshire mountain experience.”

Another SFMC partner, Tristan Witman, emphasized the personal connection: “Ragged shaped our lives in a really personal way.”

The new owners, who bring experience from the outdoor industry and general business world, have laid out early priorities focused on stability and future growth. These include:

  • Employee Retention: Ensuring consistency for the existing staff.
  • Local Partnerships: Strengthening ties within the New Hampshire community.
  • Year-Round Use: Exploring options to expand the resort's operations beyond the winter season.
  • Seamless Transition for Skiers

To ensure a smooth transition, former operator Pacific Group Resorts (PGR) is assisting the new owners through the start of the 2025–26 ski season. Crucially, the resort’s leadership team will remain in place, with Erik Barnes continuing in his role as General Manager.

“This transition brings in a group that deeply understands the mountain and the community around it,” Barnes said. “I'm looking forward to helping carry that vision forward.”

For skiers, all existing season pass products and reciprocal benefits with PGR resorts—including access to Jay Peak (Vt.), Wisp (Md.), and Wintergreen (Va.)—will be honored throughout the 2025–26 season.

Ragged Mountain, which first opened in 1965, features 1,250 feet of vertical drop, 57 trails, and robust snowmaking coverage, making it a staple destination just two hours north of Boston. The acquisition by SFMC marks a pivot toward local stewardship after nearly two decades under Pacific Group management. The new owners have promised further updates on their investment plans later in the season.
