Kronplatz, South Tyrol Is The First Resort To Open In Italy This Season

In Italy, it's Kronplatz that's set to be the first resort to open.
This winter as Milano-Cortina prepares to host the Winter Olympics, all eyes are on Italy. The likes of Cortina, Bormio and Livigno will all be hosting events so it’s worth looking a little bit further afield to escape the crowds.
Why now?
Head to Kronplatz/Plan de Corones in the South Tyrol, which will be the first Italian resort to open this season, from 29th November right through to mid-April.
With 121 kilometres of slopes, numerous challenging descents including five black runs, and an impressive 300 sunny days per year it’s no surprise that it’s where the Austrian national team choose to train.
On January 20th, it will also host the world’s best female skiers as they compete in the Giant Slalom on the Erta slope as part of the Audi FIS World Cup
Beyond the skiing, Kronplatz also offers a wealth of gourmet experiences, not least dining at AlpINN located at 2,275m altitude atop the mountain with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Where to stay?
At the base of the mountain just steps from the gondola sits five-star Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World group. This architecturally remarkable project, designed by Matteo Thun, is ideal for couples, families with children, and adventure seekers in search of adrenaline.
The FMTG - Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group is one of the leading privately owned tourism companies in six European countries. Under its umbrella, it combines Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences with 27 four- and five-star hotels, three apartment complexes and two premium campsites, FMTG Development, FMTG Invest and the tourism consultant Michaeler & Partner.
In addition to skiing, the hotel’s emphasis on active holidays is demonstrated with personal gym equipment in every bedroom including small weights and a gym ball, an indoor climbing wall and fully-equipped gym. The Experience Concierge is on hand to organise ice climbing, snowshoe hiking, or even ice bowling among a host of activities in the local area.
The Acquapura Summit SPA centres its wellness offering around the philosophy of flow, through energy, harmony, clarity, and release. These principles mirror the natural flow of water and waves, providing a holistic approach to relaxation. After a day on the slopes, unwind with tailor-made spa treatments. Enjoy the unique view of Kronplatz from the rooftop pool and Finnish sauna overlooking the mountains, swim in the 25-meter sports pool, and relax in the Summit Hammam or exclusive Private SPA Suite.
In line with the region’s reputation for culinary excellence, the 7Summit Slow Food concept on offer at the hotel celebrates innovative South Tyrolean cuisine, inspired by the flavours and traditional dishes from regions surrounding Europe’s highest peaks. A policy to prioritise local suppliers results in a significant focus on organic and artisan produce – including the breakfast ‘butter counter’ where a dozen different options are on offer.
Other nearby attractions include the Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography housed in the old cable car station at the top of the Kronplatz peak, the Messner Mountain Museum, and the Christmas Market in the charming town of Bruneck.
