OpenSnow Launches PEAKS, a Groundbreaking AI Forecast Model for Mountain Weather

OpenSnow, a trusted source for the most accurate U.S. weather forecasts, snow reports, and weather maps, has launched its newest forecast model technology, PEAKS. A first-of-its-kind, in-house AI weather forecast system that delivers unprecedented accuracy for mountain weather, snow, and precipitation forecasts worldwide, PEAKS is now transforming every precipitation forecast produced by the OpenSnow team.
“We are launching PEAKS after 18 months of research, development, training, and rigorous testing, and are excited about what it means for the accuracy and future of our forecasts,” said OpenSnow founding meteorologist, Joel Gratz. “This technology adapts standard global weather models through machine learning and incorporates historical storm data to produce more precise, location-specific forecasts that consider terrain, elevation, and local microclimates.”
The result of this technological advancement is up to 50% more accurate forecasts in mountainous terrain, with PEAKS improving precipitation forecasting by ~42%, temperature by ~82%, and wind predictions by ~72% compared to traditional models.
Mountain weather is notoriously difficult to predict because conventional forecasts treat large swaths of terrain uniformly, often missing the complex interplay of peaks, valleys, elevation, and storm behavior. With PEAKS, OpenSnow’s forecast modeling now:
-
Understands how each storm interacts with terrain and elevation specific to mountains
-
Predicts precipitation, temperature, and wind simultaneously on a fine 3 km grid — a significant improvement over the 10–25 km resolution of typical weather models
-
Offers clearer, more reliable forecasts so skiers, snowboarders, backcountry travelers, and mountain communities can make smarter and safer decisions
With PEAKS now powering every precipitation forecast globally on OpenSnow, the team plans to extend its capabilities to temperature and wind — aiming for full mountain-weather coverage by the end of 2025
“This marks a transformative milestone for winter-sports enthusiasts, mountain communities, and anyone who depends on accurate elevation-specific weather information worldwide, as it should result in the ability to make higher-confidence decisions based on the forecast,” continued Gratz.
Since 2011, OpenSnow has been a trusted source for the most accurate U.S. weather forecasts, snow reports, and now, AI-powered severe weather maps. The platform pairs expert meteorology with advanced modeling to deliver clear, actionable insights for millions of everyday users and professionals who depend on precise weather information
