Dr Sonia Khorana (aka @dermgp) Weighs In On Why Skiers Need High-Performance Sun Protection and how best to stay protected on the piste.

“Skiing and snowboarding are some of the highest-risk situations for UV exposure - far more than most people realise. At higher altitudes, the atmosphere is thinner, which means UV radiation increases. On top of that, snow reflects UV rays, so you’re not only getting direct exposure from above but also intense reflected exposure from below. This combination increases the risk of sunburn, pigmentation, premature ageing and even long-term DNA damage - all while you may feel protected because the temperature is cold.

“That’s why sunscreen is non-negotiable on the slopes. When choosing a sunscreen for skiing, look for:

  • Broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB) - essential for preventing ageing and burning
  • Highly water-resistant/sweat-resistant formulas
  • Photostable filters that don’t degrade easily in strong light
  • Long-wearing formulas that won't slide under goggles or balaclavas
  • A high SPF - ideally 30 or 50+"
