Austria's Mountains On Instagram: Dachstein Remains Number 1

APA-Comm analyzed the social media presence of local mountains – Dachstein leads the Instagram ranking ahead of Arlberg and Großglockner

The Dachstein remains the favorite among Austria's mountains on the meta-platform Instagram in 2025. As of July 30, 2025, the mountain located between Styria and Upper Austria once again reached first place with over a quarter of a million posts with the hashtag "Dachstein." This is the result of an analysis by the PR and communications service provider APA-Comm, which examined the hashtag presence of Austrian mountains for the third time after 2019 and 2022.

The Dachstein remains the favorite among Austria's mountains on the meta-platform Instagram in 2025. As of July 30, 2025, the mountain located between Styria and Upper Austria once again reached first place with over a quarter of a million posts with the hashtag "Dachstein." This is the result of an analysis by the PR and communications service provider APA-Comm, which examined the hashtag presence of Austrian mountains for the third time after 2019 and 2022. Traunstein and Grünberg, two other representatives from Upper Austria, were among the most successful in increasing their presence compared to 2019.

Top positions further consolidated

From the famous south face to the glass "Sky Walk" and Austria's highest suspension bridge, the 2,995-meter-high Dachstein offers numerous photo opportunities. The visible melting of the Dachstein Glacier also inspires many visitors to capture their impressions and share them online. With over 263,000 posts, the Dachstein has doubled its Instagram presence since 2019.

Second place goes to the Arlberg, internationally renowned for its exclusive resorts and ski slopes. Located on the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, the mountain boasts over 190,000 posts on the photo platform.

With third place, the Großglockner joins the top group of Instagram stars among Austria's mountains. A total of 174,000 hashtag entries for Austria's highest peak, representing an increase of 107 percent compared to the 2019 analysis. Both the Großglockner High Alpine Road and the view of the Pasterze Mountains lend the mountain a special appeal on Instagram.

With an increase of 59 percent and now 148,000 posts, the Salzburg Kitzsteinhorn ranks fourth among Austria's most sought-after alpine photo motifs on Instagram. As in 2019 and 2022, the Hochkönig in Salzburg ranks fifth with 102,000 posts.

Upper Austria on the rise

The Traunstein, also known as the "Guardian of the Salzkammergut," recorded the largest increase among the top 20 most popular mountains: With a 170 percent increase, the Traunstein recorded 67,200 posts on Instagram and ranked 8th in the APA Comm analysis (2019: 13th). Neighboring Grünberg is also experiencing a veritable posting boom: With a record growth of 231 percent, Gmunden's local mountain recorded 17,520 hashtag entries, improving its position by 26 places compared to 2019, reaching 39th place.

Eastern Alps achieve a higher ranking

The mountains in Lower Austria, such as the Schneeberg (6th place), the Rax (7th place) and the Hohe Wand (13th place), have also moved up several places compared to the APA Comm analysis 2019 and all made it into the top 15 of the most popular local mountains on Instagram.
