More Than 600,000 Guests Visit The Jungfraujoch - Top Of Europe

In an ad hoc announcement in accordance with Article 53 of the Listing Rules, Jungfraubahn Holding AG announces that frequencies in 2022 have recovered significantly in all segments compared to the previous year. More than 600,000 guests visited the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe and all cableways also recorded a large increase in guests at the adventure mountains. The start of the 2022/2023 winter season went well again.

In 2022, around 625,000 guests visited the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. That is 71 percent more than in 2021, but around 40 percent less than before the pandemic. The strong increase in frequency last year was due, among other things, to the fact that the number of guests from various Asian markets and the USA increased again. The number of group travelers is still well below the pre-crisis level, as there are still not enough international flight connections, there are not enough beds in the Jungfrau Region and there are uncertainties about the war in Ukraine and the global consequences of it. In addition, guests from China were still missing.

The international market visits towards the end of 2022 make us optimistic and confirm the KOF forecasts for the long-distance markets: international travel is likely to increase in the new year and reach around 90% of the pre-crisis years.

In the case of the adventure mountains, all cableways recorded a large increase in guests. With 637,500 ascents and descents, the Harderbahn was able to show an increase of 80.7 percent compared to the previous year and thus achieved the highest number of visitors in history. The Firstbahn saw a total increase of 65.3 percent. The adventure offers on First were fully booked on many days in summer and autumn. The Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain railway (BLM) counted 80.5 percent more guests, although the railway had stopped operating several times for a few weeks during 2022 due to renovation work. Overall, the Erlebnisberge 2022 recorded frequencies at a comparable level as before the Covid crisis.

Start of the winter season

The 2022/2023 winter sports season started on November 26, 2022 with continuous winter sports operations. In advance sales of the Top4 ski pass (partner offer of Adelboden-Lenk, Gstaad, Jungfrau Ski Region and Meiringen-Hasliberg), more than 33,000 Top4 ski passes were sold at the advance sales price, 3,000 fewer than in the 2021/2022 winter season. This is due to the fact that the advance sales price for the Top4 ski pass was increased from 777 Swiss francs to 850 Swiss francs due to rising energy costs. Revenue is therefore higher than in the previous year.

From the start of the season to December 31, 2022, the Jungfrau Ski Region registered 162,200 skier visits. Compared to the same period a year ago, this corresponds to a decrease of 15.7 percent. The Jungfrau Ski Region is a cooperation product in which the Jungfrau Railway Group has a sales share of over 60%.

The Jungfrau Railway Group is convinced that its long-term strategy, with a focus on international markets and 12 months of high season, will pay off again in the future. The segment of individual guests continues to grow, while there is a trend towards smaller groups in group travel. In recent months, the numbers at the Jungfraujoch have gradually approached those before Corona. Thanks to the V-Bahn generation project, the Jungfrau Railway Group has a great attraction for national and international guests throughout the year. In 2022 we counted more than 1 million guests on the Eiger Express for the first time with 1,443,400.
