Les Arcs' Flocon Vert Label Renewed With Two Snowflakes For Sustainability Excellence

During the T.REX event in Bourg Saint Maurice last week, environmental associationMountain Riders officially renewed Les Arcs’ Flocon Vert (Green Snowflake) certification — with the resort continuing to be one of a small number of resorts awarded two Green Snowflakes. This recognition reaffirms Les Arcs’ deep, ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism and ecological responsibility in the mountains.

Since first earning the label in 2020, Les Arcs – Bourg Saint Maurice has emerged as a leader in environmental action, addressing major challenges such as low-impact transportation and biodiversity awareness.

Sustainability in Action: Key Initiatives:

Les Arcs became the first resort in Savoie to obtain the Green Snowflake label in December 2020. The result of a collaborative and participatory approach, the certification involved active support from the municipality, tourist office, local tourism operators, and the mountain area management (Les Arcs/ Peisey-Vallandry).

Highlights of the resort’s sustainable development strategy include:

  • Sustainable transport solutions: 25% of visitors arrive by train—more than double the national average. The funicular aims for 1 million annual journeys and is free for train travellers in winter and for all pedestrians and paragliders in summer.
  • Responsible accommodation policy: A freeze on building new tourist beds encourages the renovation and reuse of existing properties.
  • Active summer tourism: From June 15 to September 15, Les Arcs offers a full mountain experience with operational lifts, mobility services, and open shops—supporting local businesses while preserving the environment.
  • Eco-certified mountain domain: In 2024, the mountain area received BCorp certification, reflecting its commitment to responsible activity diversification. Over 85% of the terrain remains untouched—free of pylons and ski runs.
  • Support for seasonal workers: A semi-public company (SEM) has been created to develop quality housing solutions for seasonal staff.

A National Model for Sustainable Mountain Tourism:

This renewed recognition cements Les Arcs – Bourg Saint Maurice’s position as a pioneering destination in the ecological transition of Alpine tourism. The Green Snowflake label boosts the resort’s visibility among sustainability-minded travellers and validates its forward-thinking strategy for continuous improvement.

About the Flocon Vert Label:

Created by the Mountain Riders association in 2011, the Flocon Vert (Green Snowflake) is awarded to mountain destinations that meet 20 environmental and social responsibility criteria across four categories. The label promotes long-term ecological transitions by engaging all local stakeholders.

The Flocon Vert includes three achievement levels:

  •  1 Snowflake – A committed destination
  •  2 Snowflakes – On the path to excellence
  •  3 Snowflakes – An exemplary model

Les Arcs’ two-snowflake status reflects a growing ambition to become a global benchmark for respectful, innovative, and sustainable mountain tourism.
