Laax: Apprentice Dies In An Accident At Work

On Monday, December 19th, 2022, a trainee was hit by a cable car in Laax during maintenance work on a support. When he fell, he sustained fatal injuries.

On Monday afternoon, the 17-year-old mountain lift employee was working with a colleague on support 2 of the Laax – Crap Sogn Gion cable car on maintenance work. At 2.30 p.m. he was hit by the running gear of the cabin traveling uphill and torn from the work platform.

After hitting the cabin, he fell about forty meters. After the first measures taken by the rescue service of the mountain railways, the crew of the AP3 air rescue service could only determine that the casualty had died.

Together with the Swiss Safety Investigation Board (SUST) and the public prosecutor's office, the Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the course of this accident at work. Care teams were called in to look after the relatives and work colleagues of the accident victim.

The lift was built by Habegger in 1968 with a base station  at 1100 m and a top station at 2228 m. It's vertical ascent is 1128m with a length of 4100 m. The operating speed is 12 metres per second wioth a transit time of approx. 6:20 minutes and a carrying capacity of 650 people per hour
