Jenesien Cable Car: STA Signs Contract With Leitner

The contract for the construction of the new Jenesien cable car has been signed between Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG (STA) and the South Tyrolean cable car company Leitner. The detailed design will now be finalized in the new year, and construction of the new infrastructure is expected to begin in the second half of the year. Leitner secured the contract for this major project in a joint bid with the companies Unionbau and Elpo.

"The signing of this contract marks an important step towards a sustainable, fast and convenient mobility solution between Bolzano and Jenesien. The realization of the new cable car and the intermodal hub at the valley station is essential to offer locals and visitors a strong alternative to private transport," emphasized Provincial Councillor for Mobility Daniel Alfreider at the contract signing.

STA CEO Joachim Dejaco signed the contract with Giorgio Pilotti, Sales Manager of Leitner, on December 30th. "We are now confident that the detailed design will be finalized by the middle of next year and that construction can begin in the second half of the year," Dejaco explained.

In August, the regional government approved the updated technical specifications and financing of the construction project. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately €39.7 million (€31.5 million for the works and €8.2 million for administration). Of this, €37.5 million will be provided by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport from the National Reconstruction and Resilience Fund (PNRR) for the 2026 fiscal year. The remaining amount will be covered by funds from the ERDF and regional resources.

A double-cable aerial tramway is planned from Bolzano (current valley station) to Jenesien (mountain station) with two cabins for approximately 45 people. The originally planned intermediate station has been omitted. The route in the upper section will be slightly shifted to improve accessibility. Additionally, the valley station building will be moved about four meters closer to the road. The maximum transport capacity will be around 350 people per hour. Bicycle parking will be provided at both the valley and mountain stations. A parking lot with 60 spaces will also be located at the valley station.
