Despite Corona, 2020 Was A Successful Year For Klenkhart & Partners

Klenkhart & Partner, the ski area planners from Absam / Tyrol, can look back on a successful 2020 despite the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic. The world championship experienced team around DI Christian Klenkhart and DI Christian Weiler scored points in both the alpine and the Nordic area.

In Austria as well as in neighboring countries, people have trusted in the concepts and solutions of the innovative Tyroleans for many years. With their know-how and years of experience, they are sought-after partners in the high mountains. Above all, Klenkhart & Partner is characterized by spatial planning and landscape ecological awareness. This can be seen again and again in the handling of water, nature conservation and forest law procedures, as well as the integrated detailed planning.
Representing many current projects, here are some examples of infrastructure improvements in the Alpine region:
  • FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2021 in Oberstdorf. After the successful dress rehearsal in winter 2019/2020, the technical snow-making system including natural storage pond was finally completed in summer 2020. With optimal snow conditions in the early winter of 2020, the snow security for the World Cup facilities could be established in record time.
  • A new era begins in Oberstdorf at the beginning of April. After 90 years, the old Nebelhornbahn is finally history. It was considered the longest passenger suspension railway in the world. 1,400 meters in altitude are overcome over a length of 5.7 km. The year-round ropeway, designed in 2S technology with 10-passenger cabins, was built temporarily parallel to the existing cable car operation thanks to a masterpiece of planning and engineering.
  • Also in Oberstdorf, the multi-year modernization program was continued with the construction of the 10EUB Söllereck I + II and the enlargement of the existing snow pond.
  • In Berwang, the cable cars were renewed as part of the modernization of the Thaneller ski area. After the 10EUB Obere Karbahn I, which was built in 2019, the 6-CLD / B Thanellerbahn followed in 2020, which on the one hand serves as a feeder and on the other hand enlivens the slope on the Thaneller Sonnenhang with its child-friendly design.
  • At the Geißkopf in the Bavarian Forest, a detachable 6-seater chairlift was built with a special solution for the combined transport of pedestrians / mountain bikers in summer and alpine tourists and winter tobogganers in winter.
  • The Zwölferhornbahn built in 1957 in St. Gilgen / Wolfgangsee with a transport capacity of max. 270 p / hour was replaced in 2020 by a modern, detachable, more powerful 8-seater gondola lift, with the same station locations and the same route. The range of parking spaces was expanded by adding 3 parking decks for 184 parking spaces.
  • Last year the Gargellner Bergbahnen / Vorarlberg implemented the most modern and powerful snow-making system in Vorarlberg. To this end, the Schafberg II reservoir with a volume of 66,000m³ was built and the Schafberg I reservoir was renovated and expanded. The locations, including the associated technical buildings, are located at 2,200 m and were protected by the construction of an avalanche dam. The new system with an output of 500 l / s enables basic snow to be made on all ski slopes in 3 days.
  • Last year, the new Brantlalm reservoir was built in the Brixen cable car ski area, which is part of the Wilder Kaiser ski world, in order to strengthen the existing snow-making system.
  • The Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn invested in a family hiking trail suitable for prams. The areas around the Ehrwalder Alm in particular are very popular with families. On the one hand, the existing network of trails could be used for the new circular hiking trail; on the other hand, the technically and ecologically sophisticated section of the wooded ditch between the reservoir and the Hochbrand lift was adapted to a paved hiking trail over a length of 500m. The 50-minute circular route now leads comfortably and safely back to the mountain station of the Almbahn. Numerous elements for the children, the new wooden bridge, a water playground and numerous rest areas invite you to linger.
  • The old Hotel Camping Resort Zugspitze of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn was demolished and replaced by a new hotel in 2019. The excess excavated material was used at the same time to expand the camping site, which is in high demand, by re-installing around 35,000 m³ of the excavated material in a hollow in the terrain. This required the creation of a fully effective surface drainage with basic drainage and the new construction of the spring overflow using pipe drains and a regulating shaft.
  • In the course of the “Berghütten” funding program, the Hornbahn top station and all restaurants along the Rohrgraben were connected to the drinking water supply and the wastewater disposal system in the Bad Hindelang market. An underground drinking water tank with a capacity of 10 m³ in the area of the mountain station supplies all consumers with their own pressure. In addition, the new drinking water pumping station in the valley ensures that the water is transported over an altitude difference of 600 m to the elevated tank.
  • The drinking water supply in the Hintertuxer Gletscher glacier ski area at 2,600m comes from spring water from the valley and has existed for more than 40 years. Due to the advanced age of the system, the decision was made to build a new pumping station, which was implemented using the latest technology and a double pump unit.
  • Family-friendly MTB trail in the Kaprun-Zell am See area. The gentle terrain in the Maiskogel area with the existing technical ski infrastructure was very suitable for creating an easy-to-ride single trail (classification S0 according to Tyrolean mountain bike model 2.0), which is gentle on the terrain.
  • The Navis - Rodelsport- Zentrum - Navis / Tirol is a natural toboggan run for training purposes and competitions in accordance with international standards. In addition to the natural toboggan run, the appropriate infrastructure for training and competition purposes (start and finish house, system for icing the run, wooden boards along the route, sound system and timing system) was created.
  • The State Building Authority Traunstein / Bavaria - Department of Geo-Risks and Alpine Special Construction Methods is responsible for safeguarding the state road infrastructure. In the Wildbad Kreuth area of Bundesstraße 307, the condition of the existing Grüneck development has deteriorated to such an extent that renovation was inevitable.
  • In 2020, the Bergeralm ski area in Steinach / Tyrol received an easy ski run in the area of the Hoher Turm combi lift, which is ideal for beginners.
  • Sill ramp for the Brenner Base Tunnel / Tyrol The Innsbruck Sill Gorge is the bottleneck of the major construction site. In addition to the comprehensive measures on the railway line with retaining walls, bridges and much more, it is about river engineering protection. The flood safety of the ramp in the vicinity of the city and also the fish passability at low water presented the planners with a major challenge. After careful planning, work on the four-year construction lot began.
This is a small cross-section of the international work of the committed Alpine engineering team from Absam.
