City Of Herne - The Blumenthal Cable Car Is Part Of The Public Transport Needs Plan.

The transport committee of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament has decided to include the cable car planned for the Blumenthal area in the state's public transport needs plan. This is an important milestone on the way to realizing the project, as it confirms its general eligibility for funding.

The public transport needs plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia includes transport projects in the local transport sector that are considered by the state and the participating transport associations to be of particular importance in terms of transport, environmental protection, and urban development. Inclusion of a project in the public transport needs plan also offers the opportunity to access funding for its implementation.

The planned cable car in Herne, which will operate as a shuttle service between the Blumenthal area and Wanne-Eickel main station, will be integrated into the public transport network and fare structure of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR). This will allow the cable car to be used easily with all common local transport tickets, such as the Deutschlandticket.

The Blumenthal site is connected to Wanne-Eickel's main train station via a direct cable car link, providing particularly efficient access to both regional and national rail services, as well as the extensive, partly inter-municipal bus network. With approximately 4,000 jobs expected to be created at the Blumenthal project site, this will significantly reduce traffic congestion for the city and its residents.

“The unanimous decision of the state parliament’s transport committee shows that the idea of developing the pioneering urban development project Blumenthal by cable car is not a marketing gimmick, but a serious and literally groundbreaking transport plan that has the potential to be a pilot project with exemplary character for other cities,” says Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda.
