Carve Wars: Nation’s Best Chainsaw Artists Return To Purgatory

Purgatory Resort is bringing the nation’s top chainsaw artists to Village Plaza for Carve Wars, a high-energy, three-day chainsaw art competition, August 1–3, 2025. This free, family-friendly event invites guests to experience the sights and sounds of massive wood blocks being transformed into intricate sculptures.

“We’re thrilled to be back at Purgatory Resort for what promises to be our best lineup yet,” said Joe Wenal, founder of Carve Wars and owner of Rocky Mountain Carvers. “There’s nothing like the crowd energy and mountain backdrop in Durango. It’s a highlight of our summer, and the artists always bring their A-game.”

Carve Wars features the nation’s top chainsaw artists competing in a timed event to transform raw wood into detailed, one-of-a-kind sculptures. Every sculpture will be auctioned live throughout the weekend, with a portion of proceeds donated to charity.

“Carve Wars is a favorite summer tradition at Purgatory,” said Matt Ericksen, marketing director at Purgatory Resort. “Guests are amazed by the skill and creativity on display, and we’re excited to see what the competitors will craft this year.”

In addition to high-octane chainsaw carving, visitors can enjoy Purgatory’s wide range of summer activities. Families and adventure-seekers alike can ride the Alpine Slide and Inferno Mountain Coaster, take in sweeping views on Scenic Chairlift Rides (Lift 4), pan for treasures, or paddle on Twilight Lake Board & Boat.
