Sugarbush Incentivizes Landlords To Provide Affordable Housing

After a successful first year, Sugarbush Resort is bringing back the Tenants for Turns program again this winter. The program incentivizes local homeowners to supply affordable housing to resort employees. 

Last year, Sugarbush had 28 landlords complete applications. From this, 26 employees were housed at 17 different properties around the Mad River Valley. The properties rented included 5 houses, 2 apartments, 4 rooms in a house, and 6 condos.  Rent for these spaces ranged from $275 to $640 per month.

Tenants for Turns was developed by several Western ski resorts, including Jackson Hole and Stevens Pass Mountain Resort, who have all identified affordable housing issues in their communities. The program creates a mutually beneficial relationship for resort employees and local landlords. 

The program is designed to suggest an affordable rent to property owners based on the surrounding rental market and employee salaries. In return, Sugarbush offers participating landowners either ten ski vouchers, a $100 season pass or a Family Pass to the Sugarbush Health and Recreation Center (SHaRC) for the winter season. 

“Tenants for Turns is an incredibly beneficial program for the resort’s seasonal employees, especially those that are new to the Valley,” said Vice President of Human Resources, Annemarie Todd. “Seven of the employees we housed though this program were new hires at Sugarbush.”

Landlords are encouraged to fill out an application to get their rental unit on the list that Human Resources provides to employees looking for housing in the Mad River Valley.
