Schilthorn FY 2022: Increase In All Business Areas

The Schilthornbahn AG can look back on a successful 2022 financial year: In all business areas, the number of visitors and sales increased significantly compared to the previous year. The five-year average was only just below the five-year average in some sectors. In one area, the cut was even exceeded.

Pleasant review of the past year: The number of visitors on the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria could again be increased significantly in 2022. The figures are 57.8 percent above the previous year and just under five percent below the five-year average. The summer months in particular ensured brisk growth. It is noticeable that the promising number of guests from Switzerland and neighboring European countries could be kept at a very high level. But also a large increase in guests from the USA and the Southeast Asian countries - especially Thailand and Indonesia - made a major contribution; followed by Korea and the Arab region. Travelers from China, on the other hand, stayed away completely.

Strong frequencies have a positive effect on gastronomy

Since the Schilthorn experience is closely linked to a visit to the famous 360° restaurant Piz Gloria, the increase in guests also had a strong impact on the gastronomy. It was almost able to catch up again to the best values of the years 2018 and 2019. Only a weak start in January and February, which were still characterized by the obligation to obtain certificates, narrowly prevented this. Sales in the summit restaurant increased by 120 percent compared to the previous year and are only 12 percent behind the best value of 2019. Despite personnel problems in Bistro Birg, which had a direct impact on sales, sales increased by 35 percent.

Best result since recording in the Panorama Restaurant Allmendhubel

Under the new management of Ursula Zwald and run by the Schilthornbahn independently for the first time, the Panorama Restaurant Allmendhubel achieved the best result since records began in 2022. Compared to the five-year average, sales increased by almost 30 percent. This increase is also reflected in the figures for the Mürren-Allmendhubel funicular: In the summer, the cable car was again able to increase by almost 23 percent. This increase is due to the attractive offer for families on Mürren's local mountain. Only during the winter months was the railway less frequented.

Positive results also in the hotel industry and in the shops

The positive trend was also evident in the hotel industry: the Hotel Alpenruh in Mürren was able to maintain the figures from the previous year. Under the management of Claudio Trovato, the Hotel Blumental has been revived. In the logement in particular, pre-pandemic values were achieved. The Merchandising and Shops business area was also able to exceed the limit of two million Swiss francs. The increase in sales compared to 2021 is a proud 80 percent. Only a weak start to the financial year prevented the level from being reached before the pandemic.

Significantly longer winter sports season

The 2021/22 winter sports season lasted a total of 159 days. Thanks to snow farming, the season could already start on the first weekend in November 2021. Top snow conditions and open facilities and pistes until mid-May led to an 18 percent increase in winter sports frequencies at the winter sports facilities. The winter season could start early again in 2022: the Birg chairlift and slope number 11 in the Engetal were already put into operation on November 5th. Ski teams from all over Switzerland benefited from the best conditions during the week. With the Swiss Freeski Youth Days in the provisional Skyline Snowpark and two FIS slalom races, the first two events were held early in the season.
