Parisian Cable Car Operator Will Also Partner For Urban Cable Car In Herne

All procurement law requirements have been met for Straßenbahn Herne – Castrop-Rauxel GmbH (HCR) to implement the council resolution of April 8, 2025, and establish Herner Seilbahngesellschaft mbH (HSG). As requested by the Herne City Council, HCR's partner in operating HSG will be Transdev GmbH, one of the largest private mobility providers in Germany and part of one of the world's largest transport companies.

As such, Transdev also has relevant experience in operating urban cable cars as public transport. Just this past weekend, one such cable car, operated by Transdev, went into operation in Paris.

Transdev will now also contribute its comprehensive operational know-how to Herne in order to realize and operate the planned urban cable car for the transport development of the urban development quarter “Blumenthal hoch3”.

One of the prerequisites for implementing the Council's decision was the approval of the Federal Cartel Office. This office had notified the Cartel Office in writing on December 3, 2025, that there were no antitrust concerns regarding the establishment of HSG together with its co-shareholder Transdev. Furthermore, the last deadlines under procurement law, within which an objection to the previously publicly announced intention to establish the company would have been admissible, expired on December 15, 2025.

“This clears the way for HCR and Transdev to conclude the necessary contractual agreements to jointly operate the cable car in the future. A corresponding notary appointment is expected to take place at the end of January. This is important and, above all, good news for the city as a whole, and especially for the people of Wanne-Mitte, at the turn of the year: progress is being made,” said Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda.
