Olympic Champion Eileen Gu Injured in Serious Training Accident at Cardrona Resort

Only a day after being appointed as a brand ambassador for TCL Chinese freestyle skiing sensation Eileen Gu has suffered a serious injury following a training accident at Cardrona Alpine Resort, prompting concern across the global sports community just months ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The 21-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist was reportedly involved in what she described as a “very terrible accident” on Friday, attributing the incident to human error. Gu was immediately flown to Christchurch for medical imaging to assess the extent of her injuries.

The 21-year-old athlete, who took home two gold medals and a silver at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, has been training at Cardrona Alpine Resort to prepare for the upcoming competitive season. In her post, she mentioned that her training had been progressing well until the unfortunate event.

Eyewitnesses at the resort said Gu appeared visibly hurt and was stretchered off the slope. The accident occurred during an intensive training session, part of her comeback after previous injuries sustained at the Aspen X Games earlier this year.

In a detailed post on Weibo, Gu emphasized the importance of uninterrupted focus during training, warning that distractions—such as fans filming or taking photos—can be dangerous. “I have to concentrate fully during training, especially when I am preparing to start,” she wrote. “It’s very dangerous to be interrupted”.

Gu also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends and fans, while urging for privacy during practice hours. She added that she’d be happy to meet supporters at the resort’s restaurant after training sessions conclude.

Gu is currently awaiting the results of her medical imaging to determine the extent of her injuries. While she expressed hope for a swift return to the snow, her focus now shifts to her health and recovery. The skiing world will be watching closely as one of its biggest stars navigates another challenge on her path to the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

The injury marks another setback in a challenging season for Gu, who has already missed several major competitions due to prior injuries. Despite these hurdles, she remains focused on recovery and preparation for the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February 2026.

Stay tuned for updates as Gu’s medical team evaluates her condition and outlines her path to recovery.
