Mexico City Celebrates Urban Ropeway

Mexico City celebrated the opening of the Cablebús Línea 1. The almost ten-kilometer-long urban ropeway connection links directly to the city's largest transport hub and was implemented together with Doppelmayr, the world market leader in ropeway engineering. For Mayor Dra. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the ropeway is an important element in improving the social balance in Mexico's capital. It is completely integrated into the public transport network and fully accessible for everyone.

In Mexico City, a new Doppelmayr ropeway is extending the urban transport system. The almost 10-kilometer-long ropeway connection takes its passengers directly to the city's largest transport hub, Indios Verdes, where they can easily transfer to the bus and metro. Mayor Dra. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo describes the first line of the Cablebús: "For us, the ropeway is not only a mobility project, but also a social one. We want to offer the best public transport to the people of our city and we are starting where improvement is urgently needed." The travel time for commuters on everyday routes is cut by half. In comfortable 10-seater cabins, they glide above traffic jams and arduous routes.

Konstantinos Panagiotou, CEO of Doppelmayr Mexico, attended the inauguration and is delighted with the project’s success: "The Cablebús brings great relief for people’s daily lives. This project illustrates how seamlessly a ropeway can be integrated into a city’s existing infrastructure."

One leg of Línea 1 between the Tlalpexco and Campos Revolución stations has already been in operation since March 2021. Initial experiences are very positive. The new means of transport is well accepted. With the completion of the main axis, the connection to the metro and bus has now also been created and will thus make everyday life easier for many commuters.

The new transport solution in Mexico City has directly created 300 new jobs. The ropeway is operated by Mexico City's transport authority, Servicio de Transportes Eléctricos (STE). In the first year of operation, Doppelmayr Mexico will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the installation. Subsequently, the trained team will transfer over to the city. Thomas Pichler, Managing Director of Doppelmayr Holding SE, explains: “In Mexico City, we are establishing the central support services for our subsidiaries and representatives throughout Latin America within the Doppelmayr Group. Our customers in this market for urban mobility and tourism projects, which is very important for us, thus have their partner for consulting, project development, ropeway training, maintenance and service tasks in close proximity.”
