Kahlenberg Cable Car Vienna - Survey Shows Strong Approval

The Kahlenberg cable car was presented to the public about a month ago.

The website www.seilbahn-kahlenberg.at now provides comprehensive information about the project. In addition to numerous media talks, there has also been an information event in the Kahlenbergerdorf since then, in order to enter into dialogue with the residents.

Representative survey

In order to survey the current mood in the city, the market and opinion research institute Triple M Matzka Market and Opinion Research was commissioned to conduct a survey on the attitude of the Viennese towards the Kahlenberg cable car. At the beginning of April, 900 representative interviews with Viennese voters were carried out as part of an online survey. The municipal districts of Floridsdorf and Döbling, which were directly affected by the cable car, were a particular focus.

This is how the Viennese think of the Kahlenberg cable car

More than two thirds (67%) of the Viennese surveyed consider the Kahlenberg cable car to be a “very” or “rather good” idea, while less than a quarter of those surveyed are rather skeptical about the project. 56 percent of those questioned spontaneously considered the Kahlenberg cable car to be a “very” to “rather good” idea, and after detailed information was provided, this proportion rose to a total of 67 percent. In the district of Döbling, too, the clear majority of respondents, at 55 percent, are in favor of the cable car. Of those surveyed in Floridsdorf, as many as 69 percent are in favor of the Kahlenberg cable car.

The stated political preference of those surveyed is also interesting: 73 percent of those surveyed who are close to the SPÖ spoke out in favor of the project. This value is only surpassed by respondents close to the ÖVP with 79 percent and those close to NEOS with 75 percent. The approval of respondents close to the Greens (65 percent) and the FPÖ (60 percent) was somewhat lower, but still clearly positive.

Seven out of ten respondents agree that the planned cable car is a good way to get to the local recreation areas on the Danube Island and Kahlenberg in a better and more climate-friendly way in the future. The associated reduction in motorized traffic is also a key argument in favor of the cable car for the majority of those surveyed. At the same time, protecting the habitat of the animals in the local recreation areas is very important for 73 percent.

Need for information remains high

For Christina Matzka, Managing Director of Triple M and head of the study, the data still show a certain need for information: "The more information the respondents receive about the Kahlenberg cable car, the more they can gain from the project." The project manager, Hannes Dejaco, sees a clear need in this Mission: “All in all, the study clearly shows that the many advantages of this innovative mobility offer are very positively received by the Viennese after appropriate explanation and illustration. But we also see that there is still a need for information and education, especially for the residents in the districts of Döbling and Floridsdorf. For this reason, it is particularly important to us to create the opportunity for personal exchange, especially in these districts.
