Hoher Kasten Reports Strong Annual Results – New Cable Car Planned

Hoher Kasten Revolving Restaurant and Cable Car AG looks back on a successful 2024. Although the 194,990 recorded frequencies were approximately 13% lower than those of the very strong previous year, 2023, the figures are put into perspective when the never-ending series of low-pressure systems during the summer months and the fall holidays are taken into account. The financial results reflect this success: With rail revenue of CHF 2,626,958, the previous year was exceeded by 5%, narrowly missing the record figure from 2018. In addition to the necessary operational depreciation of CHF 925,000, a further CHF 125,000 was written off. The bottom line is an annual profit of just under CHF 75,000.
New aerial tramway for a safe future
The Board of Directors has been working on the "Renewal of the Cable Car" project for approximately three years. The project aims to develop the Hoher Kasten in a long-term, sustainable, and economically viable manner, thereby securing the future of this popular mountain for future generations.
After carefully considering various options, the Board of Directors decided in November 2024 to completely replace the existing cable car. The new aerial tramway will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will have a single tower. This solution offers numerous advantages, such as greater wind stability, lower operating and maintenance costs, and enhanced guest comfort. The existing route and the opening at the top station will be retained as far as possible, thus preserving the silhouette of the mountain's peak.
According to initial estimates, the investment will amount to approximately CHF 17 to 20 million. The Board of Directors aims to have the new cable car operational before 2030.
Positive balance after leaving the Alliance Swiss Pass
As of January 1, 2024, Half-Fare and GA travelcards no longer entitle the holder to a reduced fare. In return, the elimination of cross-subsidization between full-paying passengers and Half-Fare and GA travelcard holders has reduced the price of return journeys. The simpler pricing model led to many positive discussions with passengers about Half-Fare and GA travelcards for leisure travel, relatively few complaints, and more efficient processes at the ticket counter. Overall, it can be stated that the fare change hasn't caused much of a stir.
