Helly Hansen Introduces New Arctic Patrol Down Parka Developed With Feedback From Arctic Researchers

For nearly 150 years, technical outdoor brand Helly Hansen has been trusted by professionals around the world to deliver gear that can withstand even the harshest environments. For their Arctic Patrol collection, the Norway-based brand partners with Arctic scientists to learn about the conditions they face and the kind of gear they depend on to live and work daily in polar climates. Launching in Winter 2025, the new Arctic Patrol Down Parka (£1,000) delivers lightweight warmth in a durable design, providing maximum protection and comfort even in frigid temperatures.
The Arctic Patrol Down Parka was developed in close collaboration with glaciologists and researchers from The Greenland Project. Partnering with the team of Arctic scientists, Helly Hansen’s designers understood that they needed a parka that could keep them warm and comfortable, especially during lower activity levels. Though part of their expedition requires physical exertion and movement, the researchers’ work is often sedentary as they need to sit still for long periods of time collecting measurements and examining the ice in the glaciers. With this knowledge and insight, Helly Hansen designed the Arctic Patrol Down Parka – a lightweight, warm and durable parka that provides the highest level of protection in even the coldest climates.
Made for extreme warmth, the new parka features ALLIED’s HyperDRY Water Resistant Down – specially treated to repel water so the jacket stays warm even in wet conditions. When insulation comes into contact with water, the down can often wet-out, reducing the ability to retain warmth. Using ALLIED’s HyperDRY Water Resistant Down, the insulation in the Arctic Patrol Down Parka is hydrophobic, providing maximum warmth in a variety of weather conditions. For added warmth, the parka features a detachable faux fur lining on the hood to offer protection in especially snowy, windy conditions, which can also be removed when not needed.
Additionally, each feature of this new parka is purpose-built, as Helly Hansen’s designers took on the experience and feedback of the Arctic scientists to refine each detail. With strategically placed pockets and side zippers, the wearer can use a harness while still wearing the parka, and large loops on the pockets enable easy access while wearing gloves. For durability, the parka is constructed with CORDURA® fabric, which was appreciated by the professional researchers who didn’t have to worry about reduced warmth or protection due to tearing or ripping. Additional features include – a full front 2-way zipper with double storm flap, inside stash pockets, and an adjustable hem, hood and cuffs for customizable comfort and warmth
Jan Rasmussen, expedition leader and project manager for The Greenland Project, appreciated the parka’s versatility. “It has so many functions – as both a quick layer in semi-cold weather and as a working layer in very cold conditions,” said Rasmussen. “Perfectly engineered, nice to wear and super warm.”
Another member of The Greenland Project team Niklas Marc Heineke, expedition photographer and filmmaker, added, “I've never felt more comfortable while filming below -30°C than with the Arctic Patrol Down Parka.”
“Now in its fifth season, our Arctic Patrol collection continues to evolve with new purpose-driven designs while always delivering the highest level of quality, protection, warmth and durability,” said Kristoffer Ulriksen, VP of Lifestyle & Collaborations at Helly Hansen. “Being able to work so closely with these Arctic professionals to ideate and test our designs is an incredible opportunity, and the insights and learnings we get from working with them on the Arctic Patrol styles are used to inspire the design and functionality across our entire parka collection. We’re confident that, with these insights, professionals and consumers all over the world can rely on our parkas on even the coldest of days.”
