A family of four from Denmark sustained serious injuries on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, when their gondola plummeted to the ground at the Ötz ski resort in Tyrol, Austria.

Key points

  • A gondola carrying a Danish family of four crashed at the Ötz ski resort in Austria on Tuesday, January 9th.
  • The family sustained serious injuries after the gondola plunged approximately 7 meters due to a fallen tree.
  • One family member is in critical condition, while the others are receiving medical attention.
  • The cause of the accident is under investigation.
  • The Ötz ski resort remains temporarily closed.

The incident occurred around 10:22 AM, casting a shadow over the usual wintery cheer of the slopes.

According to reports, a tree fell onto the cable supporting the gondola, causing it to dislodge and plunge approximately 7 meters (23 feet) to the ground. The gondola, designed for eight passengers, was carrying only the Danish family at the time.

Emergency services responded swiftly, facing challenging conditions due to the steep, snow-covered terrain. Helicopters were unable to land directly at the scene, necessitating the use of ropes to extract the injured individuals. All four family members, including a father, son, daughter, and uncle, were airlifted to nearby hospitals.

One member of the family is reported to be in critical condition, undergoing treatment at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital. The remaining three, transported to Zams Hospital, are also receiving medical attention for their injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Austrian authorities. Initial reports suggest the fallen tree may have been weakened by recent snowfall, though a thorough examination of the cable and gondola mechanics is underway.

The Ötz ski resort has been temporarily closed while emergency crews continue their work. Skiers and snowboarders present at the time expressed shock and concern, with many offering prayers and well-wishes for the injured family.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with mountain activities, even at well-established resorts. As the investigation unfolds, the Ötz community and beyond await updates on the family's condition and the official findings regarding the cause of the accident.
