Filzmoos Receives Tourism Award For Yukigassen

A great honor for Filzmoos Tourism: The "Yukigassen" project was recognized as an outstanding example of innovative tourism ideas at the prestigious Zipfer Tourism Award 2025. State Parliament President Dr. Brigitta Pallauf presented the Salzburg Tourism Award to representatives of Filzmoos Tourism at the "Focus on Innovation" event at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.

The award-winning sports project "Yukigassen," an original snowball event based on the Japanese model, combines winter sports, team spirit, and entertainment in a unique way. With this concept, Filzmoos is positioning itself as an innovative adventure destination in alpine winter tourism. Tourism Director Peter Donabauer commented: "We are particularly pleased to be awarded the Zipfer Tourism Prize, and it confirms our path to enriching winter tourism in Filzmoos with new, exciting offerings. Yukigassen stands for fun, exercise, and community – exactly what we want to offer our guests."

The Zipfer Tourism Award is presented annually by Zipfer, ORF Salzburg, and the SalzburgerLand Tourism Association. The aim of the award is to promote and highlight particularly creative, sustainable, and transferable tourism projects in the state of Salzburg.

How Yukigassen works

Yukigassen is a team sport from Japan that resembles an organized snowball fight. Two teams of seven players each compete on a snow-covered 10 x 36 meter field, attempting to hit each other with a total of 90 specially crafted snowballs or capture the opponent's flag. They use protective walls for cover. Anyone who is hit is eliminated from the game. A set lasts three minutes. The winner is the team that first wins two sets, captures the opponent's flag, or has the most active players on the field at the end.
