Cablecars Switzerland "Benchmark" Project Launches

Cable Cars Switzerland (SBS) will use modern methods for data collection in the future and thus offer its members additional advantages. Due to the innovation potential, SBS submits an Innotour application to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO for the "Benchmark" project.

The SBS Strategy 2022-2025 describes data management as one of seven strategic fields of action. SBS wants to "make meaningful data available in high quality". Data management currently includes seasonal monitoring in winter and summer, on a monthly basis, and annual key figures for its members in the form of the income statement, balance sheet data and operating data. Despite great efforts, the seasonal monitoring and the key figures do not have the desired data quality.

Relevance for data management

The Corona period in particular has shown how important reliable, solid and, above all, up-to-date figures are. This also applies, among other things, to the political discussion (basis for compensation calculations, etc.). In the future, the importance will increase and SBS wants to take this relevance into account. The previous season monitoring with a sample of approx. 60 cable car companies, in which monthly first entries and income are collected "by hand", is to be replaced by a - where possible and desired - partially automated benchmark.

Strong together

With the ropeway benchmark, SBS wants to improve the data quality on the one hand and modernize and simplify the process. On the other hand, SBS does not want data to flow in just one direction - i.e. from the companies or regional associations to SBS and from there to other stakeholders such as the media or politics - but that the cable car companies and regional associations can use the data for their own purposes.

Current status

Over the next few years, SBS will build up a benchmark project with strong partners (regional associations, members, University of Bern, IT and ticket system providers) and submit an application for an Innotour project to SECO. The regional associations play an important role as links to the members. In addition, a steering committee supports the project work, which has officially started. The steering committee monitors the progress of the project. Both the regional associations and the steering committee are essential for the success of the project..
