BSS News - Woods In Dew Tour Finals, Campaign Kicks Off For Aerials Skier Wallace And World Cup Action Continues

GB Park and Pipe’s James Woods has qualified for the Dew Tour finals in seventh place, with finals taking place on Saturday.

At the Ski Cross World Cup in Arosa, Emily Sarsfield was the strongest British performer with a 24^th place finish. She then matched the result in Montafon with another 24^th place. In Snowboard Cross Zoe Gillings Brier finished in 23^rd position in qualification in Val Thorens and will compete again in Montafon on Saturday.

This weekend sees British Aerials skier Lloyd Wallace tackle his first World Cup of the season in Secret Garden, China. This follows his return to competition earlier this month at the Europa Cup in Ruka.

December continues to be a busy month for the British Nordic Team, tackling with their third World Cup of the month and fourth of the season in Toblach, Italy.

Delancey British Alpine team athlete Charlie Raposo will compete in his first World Cup of the season, racing in the Slalom in Alta Badia on Sunday.

James Woods showed he is mixing it with the best, qualifying for Saturday’s Dew Tour Ski Slopestyle finals in seventh place yesterday in Breckenridge. Woodsy’s GB Park and Pipe teammate Izzy Atkin was scuppered by high winds, with the women’s Ski Slopestyle postponed until today.

In the Ski Halfpipe qualification there was a strong showing from the GB Park and Pipe contingent. Madi Rowlands finished in an impressive 10^th place, just being nudged out of finals. Murray Buchan was in 17^thplace and Rowan Cheshire, who is still on the return from injury finished in 16^th position.

With tricky conditions in Arosa for the Ski Cross World Cup (part of the 16-day Cross Alps Tour), the finals were unable to run after a snow storm made racing impossible. Fortunately, all the racers had completed the qualification, which ended up standing as the final result. Emily Sarsfield was the strongest British performer, finishing in 24^th position. Liz Stevenson was 33^rd and unfortunately Pam Thorburn DNF.

Sarsfield and Thorburn were in action today in Montafon along with Emma Peters who was making her first ever World Cup start. Sarsfield couldn’t quite make it to the finals, placing 24^th again in qualification. Pam Thorburn was 33^rd and Emma Peters in 34^th position.

Ladies’ Snowboard Cross – Zoe Gillings-Brier

Wednesday saw Zoe Gillings-Brier in World Cup action for the first time since September. At the World Cup in Val Thorens, Gillings-Brier finished 23^rd in qualification, just missing out on the finals. She is now in Montafon, Austria, for the second World Cup of the week. Saturday will see Gillings-Brier try and improve on her performance in France.

Unfortunately Maisie Potter sustained a foot injury in training earlier this week, which sadly will put her out of action for the next couple of months.. British Ski and Snowboard wish Maisie a speedy recovery.

Men’s Aerials – Lloyd Wallace

It is only four months since Lloyd Wallace suffered a scary training accident which left him in an induced coma, however the 22-year-old is well and truly back on his feet and pushing to follow in his parents’ footsteps to become an Olympian.

Wallace finished eighth at a Europa Cup event in Finland earlier this month, giving him the confidence heading into the opening World Cup event of the season at Secret Garden.

Last season Wallace achieved three top 20 results from seven World Cup starts, including a 10^th place finish in Minsk.

Men’s 15km Free and 15km Classic Pursuit – Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young

Andrew Musgrave will get another chance at a 15km Free race this weekend in Toblach, looking to improve on his credible 16^th place in the same event last weekend in Davos. He is joined by teammate Andrew Young who is coming back into form following a heavy cold. 

Callum Smith, Nichole Bathe, James Clugnet, Sam Cairns, Oliver Newman and Charlie Harrigan will all compete in the OPA races in St Ulrich, Austria this weekend.

FIS Alpine World Cup – Sunday 17 December – Alta Badia ITA

Slalom – Charlie Raposo

Alpine Europa Cup Squad athlete Charlie Raposo returns from North America to take on his first World Cup of the season on Sunday, racing in the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia. His team mates Alex Tilley and Cara Brown were due to race today in Andalo but the race was cancelled due to the weather.

Laurie Taylor will be taking his recent back to back FIS Slalom victories to Europa Cup level in Kronplatz tomorrow. Billy Major will join Taylor, for his second Europa Cup of the week, following his 36^th place in the Obereggen Slalom on Wednesday. Both Taylor and Major will then head to Val di Fassa to compete in the Slalom Europa Cup on Monday.

Speed specialist Jack Gower has been competing in the Panorama Nor-Am race series this week, with a 16^th in Monday’s Super G, followed by a 17^th and 13^th in Tuesday and Wednesday’s Giant Slaloms.
