British Skiing Legends Reveal Go-To Gear Ahead Of X Games

X Games veteran, James “Woodsy” Woods, and freeskiing wunderkind and competitor, Kirsty Muir, share their favourite Planks fits ahead of the competition in Aspen

As makers of proper good ski gear, at Planks they’re lucky enough to work with some of the UK’s most incredible freeskiing talent. With bucket loads of grit, determination, shared vibes and a passion for riding, these athletes embody the global community that is Planks. As the X Games approach, we reveal the go-to gear of two of the most exciting British freeskiers James “Woodsy” Woods and Kirsty Muir.

tFirst up is X Games Gold Medalist, World Champion and world’s biggest Star Wars fan, James “Woodsy” Woods. Long-term friend and keen supporter of Planks, Woodsy started his journey miles away from the mountains at Sheffield Ski Village, only getting his first real taste of snow when he was 15-years-old.

When he’s not working on changing the face of freeskiing as we know it, Woodsy can be found styling his own Signature Series, created with Planks.

Designed with style by the bucket load, some extra-clever features and the Woodsy trademark fit, the Woodsy Series is hotter than liquid hot magma. Right now, Woodsy can be found sporting the Men’s Planks x Woodsy ‘Yeah Baby’ Jacket and ‘Yeah Baby’ Pant in British DPM Camo as he shreds the mountains.

James “Woodsy” Woods’ Favourites

  • Men’s Planks x Woodsy ‘Yeah Baby’ Jacket -  British freeski legend, James 'Woodsy' Woods, brings heaps of style to his Yeah Baby signature jacket. Workwear meets utilitarianism, if you love your pockets, you will love this jacket. Versatility is its middle name; with the RIDEdry10 fabric, it packs dryness without the bulk, making the hill-to-city transition easy like Sunday morning. Highlights include the faux-sheepskin collar, zip-out hood (if riding switch is your thing), and remember all those pockets we mentioned earlier? Well, there’s loads. The jacket has a long fit, but you can choose to cinch in the bottom and change up the look. I wood!
  • Men’s Planks x Woodsy ‘Yeah Baby’ Pant -  Style by the bucket load, big stash pockets and the Woodsy trademark loose fit, these pants are just ace! Made with recycled 10k/10k fabrics, they’re plenty waterproof and breathable, plus use the laces-for-braces for a DIY dun-garee effect. The elasticated waist gaiter stops snow going in naughty places. Who wood’nt want this pant?

Woodsy shook up the scene in 2011 when he took home a bronze medal in his first ever X Games. Fast forward to 2017, and Woodsy was the first British freeskier to win an X Games Gold Medal. In 2019 he added the title of first Slopestyle World Champion to his growing list of accolades.

Born from humble roots himself, and with a dream to make competition skiing accessible to everyone, Woodsy has recently begun working on a new venture, Jib League, set to launch in 2023.

Next up is 18-year-old Kirsty Muir, 2022 Olympian, 2020 Youth Olympic Ski Big Air Silver Medalist and freeskiing’s next G.O.A.T.

Kirsty’s favourite gear right now is the Good Times Insulated Pant in XXL and the Women’s ‘Working Classics’ Overstoke Anorak in Army Green, which she wears in XL for some serious steeze and streetwear style.

Kirsty can also be seen on her socials rocking the Women’s ‘No Skiing On Mars’ Overstoke Anorak. A chunk of revenue from sales of the jacket are donated to Protect Our Winters (POW) UK to help fund its Carbon Literacy programme - not just a freeskiing prodigy but an environmentally conscious one too!

Kirsty Muir’s Favourites

  • Women’s ‘Working Classics’ Overstoke Anorak - Planks' take on peak-to-street for women. The Working Classics Anorak will take the knocks of everyday life and your ski trips too. They took the Overstoke’s retro pull-over cut, dropped the colour blocking and opted for a hardy, recycled, waterproof fabric with the appearance of cotton canvas. Low-key branding and shoelace-style toggles add a little mod flavour. Keep the cold at bay with 60g insulation throughout and simply unzip the under-arm zips to cool off in a hurry. It’s a “just throw it on and go” kinda jacket, with all the paraphernalia you’ll need for skiing.
  • Women’s ‘No Skiing On Mars’ Overstoke Anorak - This limited-edition Overstoke Anorak is part of our ‘No Skiing On Mars’ capsule collection. Designed with the 90’s at heart, this Anorak combines streetwear vibes with outdoorsy features. Made using recycled 10k/10k fabric, it’s plenty waterproof and breathable enough for any skiing mission, the Overstoke will prove its worth wherever life takes you. Stash your goods in its oversized kangaroo pouch and get ready to be stoked on life. A meteor-sized chunk of the revenue from sales of this jacket will be donated to POW UK to help fund its carbon literacy program.
  • Men’s Good Times Insulated Pant - The Good Times Pant is the go-to for any all-mountain skier that appreciates a little extra warmth and values the added performance of a more waterproof and breathable 15k/15k recycled fabric. It has a regular fit, handy dump pockets and waterproof zips; all the features you need for an epic day on the mountain. This is Planks' most versatile ski pant and works well with every jacket. Let the good times roll.

Growing up skiing on a dry slope in Aberdeen, the young freeskiing powerhouse has been making waves since the age of 13, when she won all three freeski titles in the 2018 BRITS against significantly older competitors.

After winning her Silver medal at the 2020 Youth Olympics, Kirsty made her way to Beijing for her Olympic debut in 2022, where she placed 5th in Big Air and 8th in Slopestyle at just 17-years-old, making her the most junior Brit at the Games.

If you want to style it out on (or off) the mountain like Kirsty and Woodsy, grab yourself some proper good gear from Planks and join the movement!

Planks’ early life was screen-printed logo tees sold to Val d’Isère locals and seasonnaires out of the back of  founder Jim Adlington’s van. They sold well and the skiing community backed it. It was a hustle, it was roots, it was Planks.

14 years on, Planks is stocked in rad stores around the world. They’re fully committed to the people and planet that they love. They continue to explore ways to lessen  environmental impact, whilst continuing to give back to the skiing community.
