Bolzano Jenesien Cable Car: Approval Process Completed

Amendment of the development plan and adaptation of the landscape plan of the municipality of Bolzano – urban planning conditions for the construction of the new cable car system created in the interest of the state

Following a proposal by Peter Brunner, the Provincial Councillor for the Environment, Nature, Climate and Spatial Development, the Provincial Government has approved the project "Reconstruction and Enhancement of the Jenesien Cable Car" and the associated urban development plan amendment, including an adaptation of the landscape plan of the municipality of Bolzano, in order to create the conditions for the construction of the new cable car system in the interest of the province.

"With the completion of the approval process, we have created the urban development conditions to implement this sustainable transport solution, to relieve the environment of road traffic in the long term, and to improve the quality of life of the citizens," emphasizes State Councilor Brunner.

The cable car linking Bolzano/Bozen and San Genesio/Jenesien was first inaugurated in May 1937. Now, almost 80 years later, extensive inspection and maintenance work would have been required to keep it running. To ensure that the service meets all the requirements of modern mobility and – much like the Renon/Ritten cable car – becomes a success with both commuters and tourists, the mobility department of the South Tyrolean government has put the STA (Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA/Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG) in charge of planning an entirely new ropeway system. A top priority of the new design: the development of a tailor-made mobility concept that seamlessly links the new cable-car stations with other public transport services and the extensive network of cycle paths.
