Austria: Halfway Point In The 2022/23 Winter Tourism Season. 8.03% Below Pre - Covid Winter Season Level

According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, a total of 30.81 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported in the first half of the current 2022/23 winter tourism season from November 2022 to January 2023. The figures were thus 57.2% higher than the comparable period of 2021/22.

"Tourism started the new year with an increase in overnight stays of 48.1% compared to January 2022 - however, corona-related restrictions still applied in January 2022. A similar picture emerges for the half-way point of the current winter season: Here the number of overnight stays is well over half that of the same period last year and only 8% below the pre-crisis record level from November 2019 to January 2020,” says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Tourism winter season 2022/23 by 8.03% below pre-crisis winter season

With 30.81 million overnight stays, the first half of the 2022/23 winter tourism season was still 8.03% below the pre-crisis level of 33.50 million overnight stays (winter season 2019/20). Overnight stays by both foreign and domestic guests (23.6 million and 7.2 million respectively) did not yet reach the level of the same period in 2019/20 by 8.4% and 6.9% respectively.

With 30.81 million overnight stays, the first half of the 2023 winter season recorded 57.2% more overnight stays than the first half of the 2022 winter season (19.60 million overnight stays). 23.36% of the overnight stays (7.20 million) were due to domestic guests, which corresponds to an increase of 42.2%. Foreign guest overnight stays also increased significantly, by 62.4% or 9.07 million to 23.61 million overnight stays.

Overnight stays in January 2023 by 48.1% over the same month in the previous year

In January 2023, 15.14 million overnight stays were registered in Austrian accommodation establishments. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, this is an increase of 4.92 million or 48.1%. The number of arrivals increased by more than half (56.5%) to 3.62 million in the same period.

Domestic guests recorded 2.78 million overnight stays in January 2023, which corresponds to an increase of one quarter compared to the same month of the previous year. Overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 54.9% compared to January 2022 to 12.36 million, with German guests accounting for 53.6% or 6.63 million overnight stays (+38.3%).
