Tourism In Schladming-Dachstein Secures Around 20,000 Jobs Throughout Austria

Tourism as the lifeline of the Schladming-Dachstein region not only drives prosperity in the region itself, but also ensures Styria-wide and even Austria-wide value-added effects, according to a current study by the economixs Institute for Economic and social research shows. On average, tourism in the Schladming-Dachstein region creates additional value of 612 million euros throughout Austria.

The development of the Schladming-Dachstein region has been characterized by tourism for years. A current study clearly shows how far-reaching the economic effects are that are triggered by tourism in the region. The Public Value Report, which was commissioned by TVB Schladming-Dachstein together with Raiffeisenbank Schladming-Gröbming, examines the economic impulses and the socio-regional effects of hospitality in the Schladming-Dachstein tourism region in the observation period 2019 to 2023.

The demand from the tourism and leisure industry affects a large number of services and goods from a wide variety of production areas. “Due to the demand triggered by guests and visitors, sales are directly triggered in numerous regional economic sectors and, as a result, value creation is also triggered throughout Styria and even throughout Austria. We wanted to make these far-reaching effects visible,” says TVB Managing Director Mathias Schattleitner. Specifically, there is an average annual demand of over one billion euros throughout Austria - triggered by tourism in the Schladming-Dachstein region.

Tourism as a job engine

In addition, around 3,600 jobs in tourist businesses are created directly through tourism in the Schladming-Dachstein region. The tourist businesses, in turn, purchase intermediate and capital goods and thus set further production processes in motion, which indirectly creates a further 3,600 jobs in trade, crafts and services in the region. The upstream service suppliers also purchase upstream services that lead to new production impulses, so that demand impulses trigger economic effects along the entire value chain. “These complex economic cycles will create an additional 6,100 jobs in Styria and 6,800 jobs throughout Austria. All in all, tourism in Schladming-Dachstein secures around 20,000 jobs throughout Austria,” explains study author Florian Schwillinsky.

Tourism creates living space

If the tourism offer is continuously improved, this not only contributes to secure jobs and continuous value creation, but also significantly to the increasing quality of life and attractiveness of the living space for the people who live here. Because the attractiveness of a region is inextricably linked to what it has to offer in the areas of mobility, leisure, health and culture. "The income from tourism makes a significant contribution to the fact that modern, high-quality infrastructure, attractive public transport offers and a wide range of health services for everyone in the region can be created and financed. As a regional bank, we see ourselves as enablers to bring many of these projects to fruition,” says Herbert Kolb, Managing Director of Raiffeisenbank Schladming-Gröbming.
