Salzburg’s Sound Of Music Anniversary Celebrations Are Half Way Through

The city of Salzburg’s 60th anniversary celebrations of the fêted film The Sound of Music reach a thrilling conclusion with The Sound of Music Gala on Thursday 23 October and an exclusive fundraising dinner on Saturday 25 October.

The Gala - tickets available at www.salzburger-landestheater.at / prices from Euros 15 to 95 per person - is themed Salzburg and the World and takes place at the Felsenreitschule (riding school). This unusual theatre, built into the rock face of the Mönchsberg, is the very venue where the von Trapp family performed ‘So Long, Farewell’ before their dramatic escape in the film.

This must-see evening for every Sound of Music fan will be co-hosted by Nicholas Hammond who played Friedrich (the eldest brother) and Johannes von Trapp (the real Maria’s youngest son). They will be joined by other original film cast members and Johannes’ children Sam and Kristina.

The audience will enjoy a spectacular evening of entertainment. Performances by the Salzburg State Theatre, accompanied by Salzburg’s Mozarteum Orchestra and a 100-strong children’s choir, will feature some of the original musical scenes. The programme will be interspersed with cast members’ reminiscing about their experiences of Salzburg and its beautiful countryside during the filming period (March to September 1964), as well as family members giving first-hand insights into the true story of the von Trapps’ adventures.

On Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October Schloss Leopoldskron (www.schlossleopoldskron.com) is celebrating its links to the Sound of Music: the castle location was used for some exterior film scenes such as shots of the family home, the terrace (drinking lemonade), the lake (falling in) while its magnificent Venetian Room, was replicated in a studio for the legendary Ballroom scene (Baroness party/first time So Long, Farewell is sung). On 24th a symposium with panellists including Nicholas Hammond alongside pundits will discuss ‘Is the Sound of Music still alive in Salzburg today?’ And on 25th, The Captain’s Dinner will be held in the magnificent Marble Hall, raising funds for the Salzburg Global Seminar, a non-profit organisation focused on global issues in education, health, environment, economy, governance and peacebuilding.
