Jenesien Cable Car: Financing Secured, Project Receives Funding

The new construction of the Bolzano-Jenesien cable car is included in the "Provincial Plan for Sustainable Mobility" (LPNM 2035). The in-house company STA-Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG has been commissioned with the planning and implementation of the project. The project has now taken a significant step forward: On August 19, the provincial government, at the suggestion of Daniel Alfreider, Minister for Mobility and Infrastructure, approved the updated technical specifications of the construction project. The green light was also given for financing.

Accordingly, the total project costs are estimated at approximately €39.7 million (of which €31.5 million is earmarked for construction and €8.2 million is available for administrative use). Of this, €37.5 million will be made available by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for the 2026 fiscal year from the "National Reconstruction and Resilience Fund" (PNRR) and earmarked for the construction of the new Jenesien cable car. The remaining amount of approximately €2.2 million is also secured through ERDF funds and state funds.

"The Jenesien cable car project is intended to provide a sustainable, fast, and convenient mobility solution for locals and visitors. Improved connections to footpaths and cycle paths, as well as the establishment of an intermodal hub at the valley station, are also important goals to make the facility attractive to users," emphasizes State Councilor Alfreider.

According to the STA report, the updated project includes a bicable aerial tramway from Bolzano (current valley station) to San Genesio (top station), with two cabins each accommodating approximately 45 people. The originally planned mid-station is no longer planned. The route in the upper section will be slightly shifted to improve accessibility. In addition, the building of the valley station will be moved approximately four meters toward the road. The maximum capacity will be approximately 350 passengers per hour. The route will run through the municipalities of Bolzano and San Genesio, with three cable car towers planned.

Covered bicycle parking spaces and secure parking areas for bicycles and e-bikes, accessible only with a South Tyrol Pass, are planned at the valley and mountain stations. Good connections for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus passengers are also planned, as well as a connection to the new 60-space parking lot at the valley station.
