Hallstadt Salt Mine Railway: A New Chapter Begins

The Salzbergbahn was in operation until August 31st – after which a new chapter began.

The biggest challenge these days continues to be coordinating ongoing visitor operations with construction work. Despite the busy summer season, work is progressing according to plan. The old shop building was successfully demolished in mid-July. Within just two days, the Salt Mine team managed to completely clear out the sales area and set up a temporary shop in containers in the garden area of the valley station. At the same time, an additional shop was opened directly on Hallstatt's market square, providing guests with an attractive selection right in the center.

Intensive work is currently underway on the foundations of the new funicular railway along the steep route – a structural challenge, even for experienced specialist companies. Significant progress is already being made in the area of the valley station:

The first foundations and the new tension shaft – the area where the counter cable will be anchored in the future – have already been completed. The new shop warehouse, the building services room, the electrical room, and the cold storage room have also been completed. At the mountain station in the high valley, the machine room and transformer room have been concreted.

A special milestone is just around the corner: On August 31st, the Salt Mines invite all employees at the site and the surrounding communities to the "The Last Ride" event. With a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony and a celebration on the company premises, we want to say goodbye together – and at the same time thank all colleagues and the community for their patience so far and ask for continued good cooperation during the future construction phase.

The dismantling of the old Salzberg Railway, which has served faithfully for over four decades began on September 1st.
