Comprehensive Modernization Of Mitterdorf Ski Center To Go Ahead

This project represents the largest structural change at the Almberg in decades. At the heart of the project are two new chairlifts – a six-seater and a four-seater – that will replace the Big and Small Almberg lifts starting in December. The goal is to make the ski area sustainable, accessible year-round, and even more attractive for visitors and locals alike.
In his address, District Administrator Sebastian Gruber emphasized the significance of the project far beyond winter sports: "This project is not only a benefit for tourism, but above all for the quality of life of the people in the region. The modernization is a clear commitment to winter sports in the Bavarian Forest – and at the same time an impetus for year-round added value in Philippsreut and the entire district. This is not only appropriate, but also groundbreaking for our region."
The investment volume of the entire project amounts to approximately 23.2 million euros. Financing will be provided, among other things, through the sale of the existing facilities, a grant from the Free State of Bavaria amounting to approximately 6.6 million euros, and loans that are expected to be refinanced primarily through future sales.
A central goal of the project is year-round use of the Almberg: In addition to the technical renovation of the lifts and a modernization of the snowmaking systems, as well as minor slope widening for winter operation, an innovative summer attraction will be created with a roughly two-kilometer-long fly line. The ride – a combination of zip line, roller coaster, and summer toboggan run – is scheduled to open in spring 2026 and will then be the longest of its kind in Europe. The offering will be complemented by an accessible adventure trail with 20 stations and an attractive children's playground.
The organizers are thus setting a precedent for sustainable tourism development in the region. The Große Almberglift was deliberately prioritized, as it forms the economic backbone of the ski resort as the main source of footfall.
