Holidays In Austria Remain A Crowd Puller

Increase in overnight stays in the first half of the summer season - "Austria is prepared for any weather – from thermal baths and culinary delights to hiking and culture."

Preliminary results from Statistics Austria show that vacations in Austria remain highly popular. For the first half of the 2025 summer tourist season, from May to July, 40.55 million overnight stays were reported in Austrian accommodation establishments.

This is a new record since records began in 1980 and an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year.

"Summer vacations in Austria remain highly popular; the first half of the season is a good interim result," commented State Secretary for Tourism Elisabeth Zehetner. "This shows how attractive our country is for guests from Austria and abroad – from the lakes to the mountains, from cuisine to culture."

Trend towards short-term bookings, focus on year-round tourism

While the overall result is very encouraging, July 2025 saw a slight decline of 1.3 percent to 18.55 million overnight stays. The decline was particularly noticeable among domestic guests (-4.4 percent), while overnight stays from abroad remained almost stable (-0.2 percent).

"We see that guests are increasingly booking at short notice, and the weather plays a decisive role in this. Weather apps now have a major influence on travel behavior," explains Zehetner. "That's precisely why it's so important to emphasize: Austria has something to offer for every weather condition – from thermal baths and wellness to hiking and lakes and cultural experiences." Zehetner sees a clear need for action for the future: "Our goal remains: We want to further strengthen year-round tourism, increase the length of stay, and specifically expand sustainable offerings."
