Hauser Kaibling & Planai Say Farewell To Senderbahn & Sonneckbahn

Hauser Kaibling and Planai: Farewell to Senderbahn and Sonneckbahn. Modern successors will ensure faster connections and maximum comfort from winter 2025/26.

The winter season came to an end – and it also meant saying goodbye to two cable cars that made history: the Senderbahn on the Hauser Kaibling and the Sonneckbahn on the Planai. Their opening in 1998 marked a crucial milestone: These two quad chairlifts completed the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Area – the continuous connection between Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen, and Reiteralm – and thus marked a quantum leap for today's winter experience in the Schladming-Dachstein region.

Since its inception, the Senderbahn cable car has safely transported a total of 11 million passengers in approximately 30,000 operating hours, and the Sonneckbahn has transported over nine million guests in over 25,000 operating hours. Now, these two pioneering systems are making way for modern facilities that—subject to approval of building permits—will set new standards starting in the 2025/26 winter season.

New cable cars take the connection between Hauser Kaibling and Planai to a new level

The Senderbahn cable car on the Hauser Kaibling is being replaced by a state-of-the-art 10-seater gondola from Leitner. With a capacity of 2,800 people per hour and a speed of 6 m/s, this will provide a significantly faster connection between the Planai and Hauser Kaibling. In less than five minutes, winter sports enthusiasts can reach the Sender plateau – just a lift ride from the highest point of the four-mountain ski area. The new 8-seater "Mitterhausalm I" chairlift from Doppelmayr on the Planai will replace the existing 4-seater "Sonneck" chairlift and offer an even faster and more comfortable connection. With a capacity of 3,000 people per hour and a travel time of just three minutes, long wait times are a thing of the past. Heated seats, covers, and comfortable upholstery ensure maximum comfort, even on cold winter days.
