Carezza Dolomites Further Reduces Emissions

The renowned Terra Institute recently provided Carezza Dolomites with its greenhouse gas footprint for 2024. Compared to the two previous years, the consortium was able to reduce emissions from 498.6 tons in 2022 to 470.1 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023. But the company at the foot of the Rosengarten and Latemar mountains isn't content with that and wants to further reduce its ecological footprint.

Carezza Dolomites is a leading tourism company in the heart of the Dolomites. As such, the consortium serves as a special role model – not only for other companies, but also for the local population and guests. "This is one reason why we not only exemplify climate-friendly behavior, but also promote awareness of climate protection through targeted communication and educational measures," says Managing Director Florian Eisath. Guests, partner companies, and employees are thus actively involved and motivated to contribute together to the sustainable development of the region.

Carezza Dolomites' climate goal is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to a technically and economically viable minimum. This is based on the continuous transition to renewable energies, the use of low-emission technologies in winter, and sustainable employee mobility.

Further savings planned for 2025

In the 2024 calendar year, emissions were again reduced by almost 12 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, comprising 60 percent of direct emissions and 40 percent of indirect emissions from upstream and downstream emissions. "The elimination of heating oil by switching to electric heating panels led to a clear decline in stationary emissions," the Terra Institute report states. Meanwhile, emissions from the vehicle fleet – particularly from slope grooming – remained constant and continue to be the largest source of emissions.

This is precisely where they want to start. Since December, the Carezza Dolomites vehicle fleet has been fueled with HVO fuel. This measure is expected to result in a significant reduction in emissions this year. Furthermore, Carezza Dolomites will continue to encourage the use of e-bikes among its employees, GHG emissions recording was expanded to include the Laurins Lounge restaurant as of January 1, 2025, and a biodiversity analysis of the ski area's natural and cultural environment was conducted in collaboration with Terra Institute. Furthermore, the consortium is an associated partner in an Interreg project on biodiversity management for mountain railways.
