Laax Promotes Low Snow Options

Despite the unseasonably warm winter, the slopes in LAAX remain open for snowsports enthusiasts, meaning skiers and snowboarders can head to the region to get their fix this season. 

Thanks to the colder temperatures at the beginning of December and investments in snowmaking infrastructure last summer, LAAX have been able to prepare 100% of the artificially snowed pistes, with around 90 kilometres of pistes, 25 lifts, two snow parks and their famed halfpipe in operation over the festive season. 

However, there is plenty more to experience away from the slopes, including paragliding,  exploring the local museums, hiking in the forests and stargazing at the Mirasteilas Observatory.  

Snowsport Alternatives in the Swiss Mountains  

Though LAAX, Switzerland is famous for being one of the world’s leading freestyle snowsports destinations, the mountain resort draws in plenty of visitors who prefer to avoid the slopes and spend their time on other pastimes.

Paraglide 2,500 Meters Above Sea Level

LAAX’s adrenaline pumping offering doesn’t just cover snowsports; the region is one of the country’s top spots for paragliders. LAAX’s Alpine Arena has ideal flying conditions throughout, caused by the dry, relatively warm, downslope wind that occurs in the mountain range.

Visitors can soar through mountain peaks between 2,500-3,000 meters above sea level, enjoying picturesque birds-eye views of Flims Laax Falera,. The resort is ideal for first-timers in need of an experienced paraglider to steer the way, as well as frequent gliders looking to take to the skies solo year-round. Real thrill seekers can even opt for a ski/fly combo, taking off and ending their paragliding adventure on skis.

Guests will need to purchase their winter hiking ticket online and head to either Naraus or Crap Sogn Gion with their paragliding gear for takeoff.

Transport Back in Time with LAAX’s Museum Scene

Culture lovers and those with a thirst for knowledge will have plenty to explore in LAAX as the region is home to many museums, libraries and exhibitions. When taking a breather from the mountains, visitors can check out the fort museum Sperre Trin to learn about the Swiss Army in the Second World War, the Museum Regiunal Surselva to take a trip back in time to the 16th century, or the Bündner Naturmuseum for a glimpse of the flora, fauna and geological history of the canton of Graubünden.

Admission to the museums vary however average at around £5 pp (6 CHF) and can be bought on entry.

Taste Your Way Around

Discover traditional local delicacies from the region whilst taking in the beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife, with LAAX’s culinary trail. As LAAX is over 1,200 metres above sea level it is one of the best destinations in Europe to see the constellations, making a great change for star-starved Brits from heavily light-polluted cities. While meteor showers only come around very occasionally, there are incredible sights to see and unmissable spectacles all year round at the Mirasteilas Observatory. Regular guided tours are available to purchase for those who want a deeper, first-hand insight into the world of astronomy and begin at 17.84 (adults 20 CHF) for an adults single entry. 

The site is also home to a 1.6 tonne Cassegrain telescope: the ultimate spotting tool for Asteroids, comets and satellites, which frequently supplies NASA with its findings.
